Forced into Shanghai’s poorest neighborhood, the Steinburgs, a family of Jewish Viennese refugees escaping the Holocaust, become neighbors to the Ye’s, a Chinese family which has suffered its own share of unimaginable loss. In spite of language barriers, resource scarcity, and the constant threat of violence, the characters develop relationships with one another in ways that change them forever.
